A unique group of music-lovers congregated in Warsaw for the annual Beats of Cochlea musical event. More than 150 applications were initially submitted, with musicians from around the world attending the festival in the hope of taking a coveted place on stage at the festival’s gala concert. As well as a love of music and exceptional talent, these artists all rely on hearing implants to hear the everyday sounds that most people take for granted.
The event began on the 10th of July in a riot of music, when 24 participants demonstrated their musicianship to an international jury. After the auditions, ten performers were selected to showcase their musical talents at the gala concert on the final evening and a further Cochlear talent, Bogdan Lyashenko from Ukraine has been chosen for his excellent execution on the piano. He also performed at the Gala concert as “special guest”. As well as the auditions and concert, there were opportunities throughout the five-day festival for participants to learn from and rehearse with each other as well as with professional musicians.
Ten Cochlear recipients attended the event, with six gaining the chance to perform at the concert alongside guest professionals. In the concert were Achim Hänig from Germany (opera), Arnau Pozas Saiz from Spain (saxophone), Dejan Živković from Serbia (accordion), Felicity Bleckly from Australia (piano), Vsevolod Khmelnitskiy from Russia (piano) and Weronika Niczyporuk from Poland (singer). We also congratulate Bogdan Liashenko (piano), Csegne Balogh (piano), Fanni Balogh (flute) and Milán Szente from Hungary, a Baha recipient, who performed (guitar) in the last two festival editions. He was no regular participant this time, but supported the Cochlear staff, helped promoting and encouraging the participants to be active and share their impressions on social media. He helped to make the entire event a joyful one.
“We are tall or small, girl or boy, accompanied or soloist. Wherever we come from and whether we speak a common language or not, we all love music! Once again this was an amazing experience where we made new friendships, got to know each other and felt that we were the centre of the world.”
