Being a CI kid is basically a pretty cool thing to be. As one of our recipients put it, a kid with a CI is “a regular kid, with extra hardware” and that’s an awesome start on the cool-o-meter. So, we’re not in the business of telling you how to be cool. But, if you want to rock the CI look to the max, here are some top tips, as recommended by kids just like you.
First off, if you don’t want to lose your cool, don’t lose your coil! If you’re the active type (or just the kind of kid that has a tendency to lose stuff) then wearing a junior clip or softband can help. There are plenty of colours and patterns to choose from and they are suitable for Nucleus® and the new Kanso® Sound Processors. Check out the junior clip to make sure that you and your CI stay together while you play together.
Cochlear Sound Processors are amongst the smallest and lightest available and they’re designed to comfortably fit even small people. But (thankfully!) we’re all different and that means that some folks need a different way to wear their sound processor. Active kids love the extra freedom of the bodyworn option and, for our littlest recipients, there’s a babyworn option. We even make a sports armband for grown up “big kids” who prefer the bodyworn sound processor when they play too!
We know that CI kids love to show off their individuality with colour and flair. Don’t fade into the background; when it comes to your CI, get busy with the coloured covers. Choose your favourite colour and a design that says something about your personality. Best of all, if any of your friends also have a CI, you can choose to be different or the same. Pick a colour to complement your outfit, or to match your hair or glasses – we don’t offer an unlimited choice, but we’re confident there’s something to suit everyone.
Wearing a CI doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy the same things as kids with normal hearing. If you like listening to music, chatting with your mates, playing computer games or watching YouTube, make sure you get the most out of the experience by using one of the specially designed True Wireless™ Devices (if your parents need some extra persuasion of the benefits, remind them how important it is to hear every word of those educational TV programmes and make sure you’re ready to name and shame teacher at school who speaks so quietly that you could only hear her with a Mini Microphone.)
Parents and teachers, we hate to break it to you, but cool CI kids do not want you around all the time! We know it’s your job to check settings, battery life and other important things but, seriously, more than anything else, your CI kid wants to be a kid, with other kids, doing kid stuff… and that often doesn’t involve you! Kids, the bad news is you can’t stop adults worrying about you (believe us, we’ve tried). The good news is, if you teach your grown ups how to use a remote assistant, they can do what they need to do without interrupting you or getting in your way. They’re happy, you’re happy, and that makes us happy!
