The chosen submission for the Winter 2017 Issue is Aisling!

I was born hard of hearing, no explanation to why it happened and I always required hearing aids to help me hear. I struggled at school and didn’t make any friends due to my shyness. As the years went on by my hearing deteriorated and when I finished secondary school I made the hard decision to move to Dublin to St Mary’s College for Deaf Girls in the hope I would finally belong somewhere.
In 2013, I found out I was expecting a baby and when she was born I made the long awaited decision to go ahead with a cochlear implant. When she was 6 months old I spent a week in Dublin away from her and missed her terribly but it’s the best decision I ever made in life! Four years later I can hear things I never used to hear all my life, like planes overhead, lawnmowers and cars coming up the road.
